There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for Nick Nash, 135 picks ahead of schedule.
The Skattebo value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Martin Emerson Jr. gives the group a proven body among the projects.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tate Ratledge in slot 36. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on Donovan Ezeiruaku in pick No. 38, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A clean, defensible pick in the 39th overall pick with a little surplus value in Derrick Harmon. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Trey Zuhn III at Round 3, Pick 3 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Emery Jones Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Antwaun Powell-Ryland in the Round 3 slot says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tez Johnson at pick No. 83 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Omarr Norman-Lott at the 93rd overall pick is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Nick Nash this early at No. 105. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They talked themselves into Nohl Williams at slot 140, and the board did not agree. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They reached a country mile for Jalen Rivers at pick 219, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Seth McLaughlin at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Cam Skattebo in Round 7, Pick 23 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
