The Cowboys clearly saw something nobody else did in Logan Brown, taking him 71 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Carter pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with wide receiver, linebacker and other spots still on the board. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The Carter value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with wide receiver still staring back at them.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · Tyleik Williams · DT · rank 31
In the 26th overall pick they get a wrecking ball inside. A real need, handled.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Landon Jackson · DL-EDGE · rank 37
Landon Jackson in pick No. 33 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Abdul Carter · DE-EDGE · rank 38
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Abdul Carter in slot 57 leaves wide receiver, linebacker and other spots for later.
R2.28 · Pick 60 · Quinshon Judkins · RB · rank 77
A conviction pick on Quinshon Judkins at pick 60 that the board grades a round light. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Donovan Jackson · OG · rank 57
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Donovan Jackson at Round 3, Pick 5. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Ozzy Trapilo · OT · rank 105
Ozzy Trapilo at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.12 · Pick 113 · Logan Brown · OT · rank 184
Value said wait; Logan Brown in pick No. 113 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.13 · Pick 151 · Jonah Coleman · RB · rank 171
Jonah Coleman in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.31 · Pick 169 · Alfred Collins · DL · rank 228
They talked themselves into Alfred Collins at the 169th pick, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.32 · Pick 170 · Nazir Stackhouse · DL · rank 163
Nazir Stackhouse at slot 170 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It fills a real need, too.
R5.34 · Pick 172 · Hunter Wohler · S · rank 191
Hunter Wohler at pick 172 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R5.35 · Pick 173 · Davison Igbinosun · CB · rank 193
A wild overpay on Davison Igbinosun in Round 5, Pick 35, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Bryson Nesbit · TE · rank 207
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Bryson Nesbit. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
