The war room fell hard for Joey Slackman, and it showed at the 170th overall pick: 80 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Allar at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Jackson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with linebacker still on the board.
That linebacker hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and linebacker is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 28 they get a problem off the edge, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Deone Walker at pick 33 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They liked TreVeyon Henderson enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 57. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Landon Jackson at edge rusher with linebacker open.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jack Nelson. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tez Johnson at the 84th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Logan Brown at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nazir Stackhouse in the 129th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
A big swing on Alfred Collins at Round 5, Pick 13, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Drew Allar in No. 155 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Jonah Coleman in slot 169 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Joey Slackman this early at the 170th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They talked themselves into Hunter Wohler at pick 172, and the board did not agree. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Davison Igbinosun in pick No. 175 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mason Taylor well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value said wait; Terrance Ferguson in the 219th overall pick says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Oronde Gadsden II at Round 7, Pick 28 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
You do not let a safety like Dasan McCullough reach pick No. 252 and blink. They did not. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
