Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Damien Martinez, the No. 160 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 211.
Every board in the league had Kiser lower, and that gap is the story. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a three-down runner, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
They read the board right and Tyleik Williams was the payoff at slot 54. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tre Harris in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 87, where Carson Schwesinger graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Aeneas Peebles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jack Kiser in the 159th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Oronde Gadsden II. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in the 204th pick, with Vernon Broughton worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
Circle this one: Damien Martinez at Round 6, Pick 35 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
