The Cowboys did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B+.

The Xavian Sorey Jr. selection is the head-turner. The Cowboys reached 50 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.

That Williams pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.3 · Pick 35 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 36
They paid sticker price for Omarion Hampton in pick 35, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Cameron Ward · QB · rank 65
They read the board right and Cameron Ward was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.30 · Pick 94 · Trey Zuhn III · OT · rank 103
A reach for Trey Zuhn III in the 94th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.11 · Pick 107 · Denver Harris · CB · rank 113
A straight-up fair deal on Denver Harris at pick No. 107, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.18 · Pick 114 · Hunter Wohler · S · rank 93
Hunter Wohler at the 114th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.29 · Pick 125 · Dasan McCullough · LB · rank 122
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dasan McCullough in No. 125. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.30 · Pick 126 · Xavian Sorey Jr. · LB · rank 176
Xavian Sorey Jr. in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.3 · Pick 131 · Jasheen Davis · DL-EDGE · rank 152
Jasheen Davis at pick 131 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R5.11 · Pick 139 · Akheem Mesidor · DL-EDGE · rank 166
A wild overpay on Akheem Mesidor in Round 5, Pick 11, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R5.27 · Pick 155 · Bru McCoy · WR · rank 180
They reached a country mile for Bru McCoy at the 155th pick, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.29 · Pick 157 · Dominic Lovett · WR · rank 181
They reached into another round for Dominic Lovett, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.30 · Pick 158 · Antonio Williams · WR · rank 126
Antonio Williams at the 158th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.18 · Pick 178 · Steve Linton · LB-EDGE · rank 179
No drama and no debate, Steve Linton went about where he belonged in No. 178. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R6.30 · Pick 190 · Justin Walley · CB · rank 177
Justin Walley at slot 190 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.3 · Pick 195 · Deshawn Pace · S · rank 207
Deshawn Pace at Round 7, Pick 3 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R7.29 · Pick 221 · Corey Kiner · RB · rank 245
This one needs a full-page explanation: Corey Kiner in the 221st pick, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
R7.30 · Pick 222 · Will Rogers · QB · rank 239
A reach on Will Rogers in pick No. 222; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
