When the story of this class is written, it opens with George Gumbs Jr. at Round 5, Pick 13, a reach of 37 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
Lew at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd pick they get juice off the edge, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Romello Height in slot 54 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A slide stopped in pick No. 68, with Germie Bernard worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tyreak Sapp in No. 98 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Connor Lew at pick 114 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Hezekiah Masses in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into George Gumbs Jr. at slot 153, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Aamil Wagner at pick 178 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They let J'Mari Taylor come to them and pounced at pick No. 197. A need, and now a little less of one.
