The war room fell hard for Patrick Payton, and it showed at the 173rd overall pick: 74 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Demmings.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 14 they get a disruptor off the edge, reach and all.
Caleb Tiernan in Round 2, Pick 13 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Fair-plus on Elijah Sarratt, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for Keylan Rutledge in pick 115, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Skyler Gill-Howard in No. 154 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Charles Demmings in pick No. 162 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Patrick Payton. It fills a real need, too.
Nice patience on Cyrus Allen, who had no business lasting to pick 174. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Eric O'Neill at Round 6, Pick 30, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Fa'alili Fa'amoe at No. 250 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They did well to land Desmond Reid in the 253rd pick, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
