Nobody had Cody Simon this high, and it is not close. The Vikings reached 135 spots to get him at No. 190. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while offensive lineman, running back and other spots went begging. The Mustapha steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The offensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Jer'Zhan Newton at pick 11 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in No. 42 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They did well to land Michael Pratt in the 109th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Johnny Dixon in pick No. 130 leaves offensive lineman, running back and other spots for later.
They read the board right and Malik Mustapha was the payoff at slot 156. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Keith Randolph Jr. slid further than he should have, and the 166th pick is lovely value for the edge rusher. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A real head-scratcher, Gabe Hall in the 179th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cody Simon in pick No. 190 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
