Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Vikings were there to profit. Isaiah Adams, the No. 126 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 190th overall pick. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 26 they get an island corner, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
In No. 31 they get an anchor for the defensive front at a price that makes it sweeter.
J.J. McCarthy at the 41st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled DeWayne Carter all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Malik Washington in pick 156 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Sione Vaki in pick No. 166 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Isaiah Adams in the 190th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
