You could see the war room lean forward. Isaiah Williams at the 233rd overall pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. If Laube pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
In the end it comes back to Quinyon Mitchell, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a sticky cover corner, and a steal at that.
They took Chris Braswell at par in slot 42, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
J.J. McCarthy at Round 2, Pick 23 is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Fair-plus on Brenden Rice, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zak Zinter in the 109th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Dylan Laube in the 136th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
Nothing to complain about; Mason McCormick went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had Johnny Dixon higher than pick 190, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Tip Reiman at the 222nd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Isaiah Williams in slot 233 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
