After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Dixon. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety. If McCarthy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get their quarterback of the future, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In No. 23 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Maason Smith at pick 108 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
James Williams at the 129th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Braiden McGregor at the Round 5 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jordan Travis in the 167th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tanor Bortolini at Round 6, Pick 2 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Trevin Wallace at slot 230 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Johnny Dixon in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
