The tape said wait; the Vikings did not. Jam Griffin went at pick 233, a good 155 picks before the board was ready.

They banked enough surplus on Ransom to cover a lot of smaller sins. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with safety chief among the fixes.

It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.24 · Pick 24 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 27
In No. 24 they get a matchup problem out wide. A clean fit for the roster.
R3.33 · Pick 97 · Luke Kandra · OG · rank 105
They paid up for Luke Kandra at the 97th pick when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.1 · Pick 138 · Cobee Bryant · CB · rank 175
Cobee Bryant at pick 138 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.10 · Pick 147 · Mello Dotson · CB · rank 128
Mello Dotson at Round 5, Pick 10 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R5.11 · Pick 148 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 110
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Cam Skattebo in pick No. 148, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
R5.22 · Pick 159 · Kamren Fabiculanan · S · rank 253
Kamren Fabiculanan in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.31 · Pick 168 · Ty Hamilton · DT · rank 207
They reached a country mile for Ty Hamilton at slot 168, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.33 · Pick 170 · Mario Williams · WR · rank 313
Value said wait; Mario Williams in pick No. 170 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.11 · Pick 186 · Hunter Wohler · S · rank 217
A big swing on Hunter Wohler at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Lathan Ransom · S · rank 103
They robbed the room for Lathan Ransom here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.17 · Pick 233 · Jam Griffin · RB · rank 388
Jam Griffin in No. 233 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.24 · Pick 240 · Jake Smith · WR · rank 355
They talked themselves into Jake Smith at the 240th pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
R7.32 · Pick 248 · Garrett Dellinger · OG · rank 261
The board had cheaper options than Garrett Dellinger at the 248th overall pick, and it noticed. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.33 · Pick 249 · Bryson Nesbit · TE · rank 246
Fair-plus on Bryson Nesbit, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.35 · Pick 251 · Jaishawn Barham · LB · rank 205
Jaishawn Barham in No. 251 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R7.36 · Pick 252 · Fentrell Cypress II · CB · rank 292
They left a pile of value on the table to take Fentrell Cypress II this early at pick 252. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.38 · Pick 254 · Dontae Manning · CB · rank 382
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dontae Manning well ahead of where he belonged. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R7.39 · Pick 255 · Fred Davis · CB · rank 364
They reached into another round for Fred Davis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.40 · Pick 256 · Noah Daniels · CB · rank 358
A wild overpay on Noah Daniels in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
