It is the swing that defines the weekend: Myles Murphy in slot 166, a good 53 spots before the room expected him.
However the rest shakes out, James at that price is a win they earned. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. So much rides on Michael Penix Jr. that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 11 they get a passer to set the clock by. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In No. 12 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Kool-Aid McKinstry slid further than he should have, and pick 42 is lovely value for the cornerback. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Circle this one: Blake Fisher at the 109th pick is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They will replay Jalen McMillan at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They barely believed it either: DJ James still on the board at Round 5, Pick 20. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A big swing on Myles Murphy at pick 166, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Malik Mustapha in No. 179 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ty'Ron Hopper at the 190th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It adds depth where they could use a little.
