The trade table was where it all came apart. The Vikings shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
They will need Travis to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Williams. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a potential shutdown corner, even if it was a touch early. More want than need.
They took Patrick Paul at par in pick No. 42, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Zach Frazier at No. 56, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
McKinnley Jackson in slot 74 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Travis in pick 109 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tommy Eichenberg in No. 130 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
They did well to land Malik Mustapha in the 145th pick, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Braelon Allen at slot 157 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, Layden Robinson at pick 166 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brennan Jackson. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A quiet steal in the 201st overall pick: Daijahn Anthony for less than the market said. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A premium they did not need to pay, Brevyn Spann-Ford a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay Isaiah Williams at pick No. 241 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
