There is reaching, and then there is Tyler Shough at slot 252. The Dolphins jumped the board by 170 and dared it to prove them wrong. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Stutsman. The Dolphins indulged a want in Castro while a need in edge rusher stayed open.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 13 they get a building block for the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
Malaki Starks at No. 48 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
By-the-book stuff, Mason Taylor at Round 3, Pick 34 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 114 on Sebastian Castro with edge rusher unsolved.
Taking Danny Stutsman in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach the 149th pick and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
They went early on Shemar Turner in Round 5, Pick 17, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jonah Monheim in pick No. 224. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Zakhari Franklin in pick 231, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tyler Shough at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
