Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent slot 212 on Evan Anderson, a name the board had a full 61 spots lower.
The Irving pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy little value on Troy Fautanu in slot 36, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at par in pick No. 56, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Caelen Carson went about where he belonged in No. 67. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Braden Fiske at Round 3, Pick 24 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Bucky Irving at the 102nd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had Ainias Smith higher than pick 124, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Jaylan Ford in No. 174; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Evan Anderson at pick No. 212 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Walter Rouse at the 245th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
