When a board-topper like Terrance Ferguson slides to No. 144, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Reaching for Ersery left real value on the table behind him. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick No. 29 they get a cornerstone up front, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Donovan Jackson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Andrew Mukuba in No. 77; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Terrance Ferguson at the 144th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Somehow Jarquez Hunter was still sitting there in slot 217, and they pounced on premier running back value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Jay Higgins in pick 220 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A tidy bit of business in the 238th overall pick, where Cam Horsley graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
