After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
They will need Logue to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher still on the board.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.27
· Pick 27
· J.J. McCarthy
· QB
· rank 32
In pick 27 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Ja'Tavion Sanders
· TE
· rank 36
Ja'Tavion Sanders in Round 2, Pick 2 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.6
· Pick 38
· Jordan Morgan
· OT
· rank 37
No edge and no loss on Jordan Morgan in pick No. 38; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.2
· Pick 66
· Ja'Lynn Polk
· WR
· rank 70
They took Ja'Lynn Polk at par in slot 66, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Xavier Legette
· WR
· rank 72
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at the 68th pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.27
· Pick 90
· Cam Hart
· CB
· rank 91
Cam Hart in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.33
· Pick 96
· Bucky Irving
· RB
· rank 90
Bucky Irving at No. 96 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.4
· Pick 104
· Javon Solomon
· OLB-EDGE
· rank 113
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Javon Solomon at OLB-EDGE with edge rusher open.
R4.36
· Pick 136
· Christian Jones
· OT
· rank 136
Christian Jones at slot 136 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
R5.1
· Pick 137
· Cedric Gray
· LB
· rank 124
Nice patience on Cedric Gray, who had no business lasting to the 137th pick. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.16
· Pick 152
· Malik Mustapha
· S
· rank 152
No drama and no debate, Malik Mustapha went about where he belonged in pick 152. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.9
· Pick 229
· Zion Logue
· DL
· rank 289
Zion Logue at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.22
· Pick 242
· Charles Turner III
· C
· rank 285
A big swing on Charles Turner III at the 242nd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
