Some picks age like wine; Jo'Quavious Marks at the Round 4 slot will need to, sitting 71 spots clear of his grade. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
Roberts falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick-by-Pick
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 40 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Kris Abrams-Draine slid further than he should have, and pick 44 is lovely value for the cornerback. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Cooper DeJean at the 51st overall pick that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid up for Zach Frazier at slot 83 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Zak Zinter at Round 3, Pick 25 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jo'Quavious Marks this early at pick No. 119. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A tidy little value on James Williams in pick 135, a step better than break-even. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Taking Jamari Thrash in the 197th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Joshua Gray at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
They paid sticker price for Darius Muasau in No. 219, and that is fine. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Jase McClellan at Round 7, Pick 3 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Willie Roberts here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
