The Packers bet big and early on Sean Martin, 70 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
Monheim at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Johnny Wilson at the 39th overall pick is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Fair-plus on Kris Abrams-Draine, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
T.J. Tampa in pick 75 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Javon Foster here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
Braelon Allen in Round 3, Pick 24 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
AJ Barner in the Round 4 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They went early on Jaden Hicks in No. 112, and the value did not follow. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They paid a round early for Shemar Turner in Round 4, Pick 23, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on Payton Wilson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid sticker price for Devin Neal in slot 149, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Theo Wease at pick 189 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They barely believed it either: Jonah Monheim still on the board at the 211th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jase McClellan. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Sam Hartman well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value said wait; Sean Martin in the 232nd overall pick says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
