Call it larceny. Malachi Moore sat on the board until Round 4, Pick 19, and the Commanders did not need to be asked twice. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Every board in the league had Grimes lower, and that gap is the story. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 22 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Grey Zabel at Round 2, Pick 24 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Tez Johnson in the 84th overall pick; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Malachi Moore in No. 120 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
They barely believed it either: Smael Mondon Jr. still on the board at the 147th pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Steal is underselling it; Jake Slaughter at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tight end of that caliber at pick No. 239 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tony Grimes in slot 246 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
