There is conviction, and then there is this. The Commanders took R.J. Oben a full 106 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
Getting Judkins where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 29 they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Charles Grant at the 61st pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Maxwell Hairston at the 85th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quinshon Judkins in pick 120 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jordan Hancock slipping to pick No. 203 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They barely believed it either: Seth McLaughlin still on the board at pick 236. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached into another round for R.J. Oben, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
