The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Caleb Williams, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Tight end is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Troy Fautanu in the 36th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nothing to complain about; Bralen Trice went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid sticker price for Junior Colson in No. 77, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Zak Zinter at the 100th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Bucky Irving slid further than he should have, and pick No. 102 is lovely value for the running back. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Matt Goncalves at slot 112 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaheim Bell in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Ethan Driskell at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Somehow Christian Jones was still sitting there in the 223rd pick, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Good price on Steele Chambers in Round 7, Pick 14, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
