You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Everything downstream of Caleb Williams depends on Caleb Williams, and the building knows it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
On value alone, Franklin makes the weekend a net positive.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Keon Coleman in slot 26 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Good price on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 67, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Blake Fisher at pick No. 100 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Jaheim Bell at par in Round 5, Pick 3, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Jaylen Harrell in the 181st pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nothing to complain about; Josh Proctor went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Zakhari Franklin in pick 223. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
