The Cowboys bet big and early on Cedric Gray, 26 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Proctor value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 29th pick they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zach Frazier. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Patrick Paul in slot 73. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Blake Corum at No. 87 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A wild overpay on Cedric Gray in Round 3, Pick 37, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid up for McKinnley Jackson at pick No. 107 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They did well to land Kamal Hadden in No. 173, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had Nathan Thomas higher than pick No. 216, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Josh Proctor in the 233rd overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Whittington at pick 244, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
