You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Patriots did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The cost of the Laumea reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Ja'Tavion Sanders in Round 2, Pick 2 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nothing to complain about; Devontez Walker went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Sataoa Laumea at pick No. 104 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
They paid up for Tykee Smith at No. 136 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
