The Commanders torched the value chart for Grant Gunnell, taking him 231 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They have staked the next five years on Bo Nix, which is the only story that really matters here.
The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback, running back and other spots still on the board. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with cornerback still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th overall pick they get a red-zone target to build around. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick No. 10 they get their guy under center for the next decade, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Chop Robinson went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 4. The roster fit checks out.
A conviction pick on Zach Frazier at the 47th pick that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Fair-plus on Adisa Isaac, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid sticker price for Johnny Wilson in pick 69, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Joe Milton III well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They talked themselves into Anim Dankwah at the 101st pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went OLB-EDGE with Javon Solomon while clear needs at cornerback, running back and other spots sat open.
Zak Zinter at the 106th overall pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Tommy Eichenberg at pick No. 124, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jaylan Ford at No. 138 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They liked Javion Cohen enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 5 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for AJ Barner. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take De'Corian Clark this early at the Round 6 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Jaylen Harrell in No. 184, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Grant Gunnell in pick 219 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached a country mile for Jesus Gibbs at pick No. 220, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Frank Crum at slot 245 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
