Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chiefs were there to profit. Jordan Hancock, the No. 63 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 7, Pick 32.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at fair value. A real need, handled.
Ashton Gillotte in pick 64 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tate Ratledge slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wide receiver of that caliber at No. 96 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They barely believed it either: Walter Nolen still on the board at the 128th overall pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Circle this one: Devin Neal at pick No. 160 is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Dorian Strong in Round 7, Pick 1 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Taking Jordan Hancock in the 224th pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
