The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A to cap it.
Walker at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 27th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
In No. 28 they get a cornerstone up front at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 41 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ladd McConkey at the 60th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Patrick Paul in the Round 3 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Devontez Walker here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Ray Davis went about where he belonged in pick 102. The roster fit checks out.
Tyrice Knight at pick No. 133 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
Taking Matt Goncalves in Round 5, Pick 5 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Laube still on the board at the Round 6 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Michael Barrett in pick 203, plain and simple. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Jordan Magee slid further than he should have, and slot 219 is lovely value for the linebacker. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Christian Jones reach the 223rd overall pick and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
