The board owed the Dolphins one, and it paid up: DJ Giddens, the No. 170 name on the board, sitting there at pick No. 224 like a gift left on the doorstep.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They will need Collins to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 13 they get a matchup weapon at tight end. A real need, handled.
Alfred Collins at pick 48 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had Ozzy Trapilo higher than slot 98, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board fumbled Sebastian Castro all the way to Round 4, Pick 14, and they scooped it up. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jeffrey Bassa at the 135th overall pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cobee Bryant at the 150th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor itch, scratched.
Circle this one: Riley Leonard at No. 155 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
DJ Giddens in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson in pick 231, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Ricky White III in slot 253 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
