New England Patriots

Best value of the weekend goes to the Patriots for Washington: B.

You could see the war room lean forward. Malik Washington at the Round 4 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They are betting Irving proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.27 · Pick 27 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 25
In pick 27 they get an island corner. More want than need.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
They paid a round early for J.J. McCarthy in slot 34, more than the board wanted. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 27
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tyler Guyton at No. 35 is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 45
They will replay Roman Wilson at Round 3, Pick 2 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 67
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at the 68th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 56
They let Xavier Worthy come to them and pounced at the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 93
They paid up for Bucky Irving at the 79th pick when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 74
Xavier Legette in pick No. 90 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.22 · Pick 122 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 109
Value with a capital V on Braelon Allen in the 122nd pick, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 144
A reach on Tommy Eichenberg in slot 132; the board had better options right there. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.36 · Pick 136 · Malik Washington · WR · rank 98
Malik Washington in No. 136 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 146
Roger Rosengarten at pick 182 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.39 · Pick 214 · Myles Harden · CB · rank 184
The board fumbled Myles Harden all the way to pick No. 214, and they scooped it up. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
