The war room fell hard for Arik Gilbert, and it showed at the 226th pick: 39 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
Getting Thomas Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Jermaine Eluemunor deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Rome Odunze and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 13 they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Terrion Arnold at Round 2, Pick 5 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 44 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Sedrick Van Pran this early at No. 69. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Roman Wilson is a better player than pick 105 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Audric Estime in the 110th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy bit of business in the 142nd pick, where Kamal Hadden graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jonah Monheim in pick 183. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Arik Gilbert in slot 226, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Dwight McGlothern slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
