The war room fell hard for Trevin Wallace, and it showed at pick 91: 60 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The Grable pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The Packers indulged a want in Oladapo while a need in edge rusher, cornerback and other spots stayed open. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a building block for the line, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Javon Bullard at slot 41 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Somehow Jordan Morgan was still sitting there in pick No. 58, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It fills a real need, too.
MarShawn Lloyd at No. 88 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A big swing on Trevin Wallace at pick 91, well ahead of any board in the building. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Kitan Oladapo at safety with edge rusher, cornerback and other spots open.
Nice patience on Jordan Magee, who had no business lasting to pick 169. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They reached into another round for Jacob Monk, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board had cheaper options than Trey Taylor at pick No. 219, and it noticed. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They took Michael Barrett at par in Round 7, Pick 25, which is nothing to complain about. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Circle this one: Tylan Grable at the 255th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
