New England Patriots

A passer of the future in Daniels, and a B, for the Patriots.

The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Jayden Daniels, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

The Guyton pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.

They will answer for taking TE-EDGE early while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 8
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 47
A reach on Patrick Paul in pick 34; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 36
Circle this one: Xavier Legette at No. 68 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 40
Taking Tyler Guyton in pick No. 76 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · Cade Stover · TE-EDGE · rank 94
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cade Stover at TE-EDGE with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
R3.35 · Pick 98 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
No edge and no loss on Khyree Jackson in the 98th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 86
The board had Marist Liufau higher than slot 103, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 171
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Frank Gore Jr. at the 182nd overall pick is the proof. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.4 · Pick 224 · Kenny Logan Jr. · S · rank 210
A tidy bit of business in the 224th pick, where Kenny Logan Jr. graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Jawhar Jordan · RB · rank 209
They will replay Jawhar Jordan at slot 232 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
