The Patriots did not so much draft Austin Reed as overpay for him, 43 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Rakestraw Jr.. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Micah Parsons deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
They let Amarius Mims come to them and pounced at pick 34. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They will replay Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at the 68th pick for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board fumbled Renardo Green all the way to Round 4, Pick 3, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Michael Pratt in pick No. 137 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Luke McCaffrey in the 180th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jha'Quan Jackson at the Round 6 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached into another round for Austin Reed, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
