Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent slot 104 on Taulia Tagovailoa, a name the board had a full 129 spots lower.
So much rides on Drake Maye that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Trey Benson at pick 34 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ray Davis. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Taulia Tagovailoa in pick No. 104, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Keith Randolph Jr. in the 136th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
David Ugwoegbu at slot 182 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Troy Omeire in the 229th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
