Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Jake Golday, the No. 58 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 92. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. They will need Prysock to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. The Cowboys clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.
Pick-by-Pick
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in CJ Allen. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They read the board right and Chris Johnson was the payoff at the 47th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A slide stopped in the 59th pick, with Caleb Banks worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
A.J. Haulcy at pick No. 78 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Somehow Jake Golday was still sitting there in pick 92, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Dametrious Crownover at slot 152 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid up for Ephesians Prysock at No. 177 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Taylen Green in Round 5, Pick 40, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Harrison Wallace III is a better player than the 218th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
