Call it larceny. A.J. Haulcy sat on the board until Round 3, Pick 11, and the Dolphins did not need to be asked twice. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The Dolphins indulged a want in Haulcy while a need in wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots stayed open. The Freeling pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a cornerstone up front, reach and all. A real need, handled.
In pick 30 they get the heartbeat of the defense, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Dillon Thieneman slid further than he should have, and slot 43 is lovely value for the safety. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking A.J. Haulcy at safety with wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots open.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Davison Igbinosun at pick No. 130. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Drew Allar at the 151st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Robert Spears-Jennings at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They let TJ Hall come to them and pounced at No. 238. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
