The rest of the league had time to spare on Sam Hartman; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 75 spots ahead at Round 6, Pick 33. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.
A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want. That is an interior defensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Bottom line, with Dallas Turner leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.21
· Pick 21
· Dallas Turner
· LB-EDGE
· rank 14
In pick 21 they get juice off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Kool-Aid McKinstry
· CB
· rank 25
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 34th pick is the proof. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R2.23
· Pick 55
· Kiran Amegadjie
· OT
· rank 65
A reach on Kiran Amegadjie in slot 55; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Ruke Orhorhoro
· DT
· rank 55
They let Ruke Orhorhoro come to them and pounced at the Round 3 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.35
· Pick 135
· Dallin Holker
· TE
· rank 158
They talked themselves into Dallin Holker at the 135th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.3
· Pick 139
· Jordan Travis
· QB
· rank 157
Jordan Travis at pick No. 139 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.19
· Pick 155
· Jaheim Bell
· TE
· rank 163
Jaheim Bell in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.7
· Pick 182
· Jha'Quan Jackson
· WR
· rank 178
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jha'Quan Jackson in No. 182. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.33
· Pick 208
· Sam Hartman
· QB
· rank 283
Sam Hartman in the 208th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.9
· Pick 229
· Ryan Cooper Jr.
· CB
· rank 230
Ryan Cooper Jr. in the 229th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.36
· Pick 256
· Jordan Magee
· LB
· rank 244
Jordan Magee at Round 7, Pick 36 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
