The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 40 spots for Frank Crum, and value like that does not grow back. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. They banked enough surplus on Melton to cover a lot of smaller sins.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
Adonai Mitchell at slot 41 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Payton Wilson at the 58th pick, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Max Melton worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jaden Hicks in Round 3, Pick 28 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jarrian Jones at pick No. 126 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid up for Khristian Boyd at slot 169 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on Garret Greenfield, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Magee at the 219th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Donovan Jennings in pick 245 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Frank Crum. A need, and now a little less of one.
