The Packers went off the board in a big way for Joe Milton III, 37 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C in the wash.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
So much rides on Tyler Nubin that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 31 they get a two-high chess piece, reach and all. More want than need.
Junior Colson at Round 2, Pick 16 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Kingsley Suamataia in No. 58 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Trey Benson at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Zak Zinter in slot 99 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
They paid sticker price for Tyler Davis in the 112th pick, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Josh Newton at Round 4, Pick 27 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jaylin Simpson at the 129th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Fair-plus on Tykee Smith, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Joe Milton III in No. 162 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Elijah Jones this early at slot 168. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They went early on Gabe Hall in pick No. 204, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Magee in pick 209 is miles ahead of his ranking. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Rasheen Ali at the 216th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Trevin Wallace at slot 243 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They paid up for Joshua Cephus at No. 246 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Solomon Byrd at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
