Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Commanders came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close.
The Abrams-Draine pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver, cornerback and other spots. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. However the rest shakes out, Fatheree II at that price is a win they earned.
The cost of the Bell reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 29th overall pick they get a centerfielder for the defense at fair value.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in slot 39 is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 3 slot on Kris Abrams-Draine with wide receiver, cornerback and other spots unsolved.
They liked Jaheim Bell enough to skip the value, taking him in the 107th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 8 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Carson Steele in No. 228, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
