You can hear the double-takes from here. The Dolphins took Harold Perkins Jr. at the 92nd overall pick, roughly 40 spots before his name belonged. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
Muhammad at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Muhammad pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots still on the board.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, with Sonny Styles leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 31 they get a three-down second-level presence, outstanding value to boot.
They talked themselves into Dontay Corleone at the 48th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Domonique Orange at slot 75, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Keionte Scott at the Round 3 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Deion Burks in pick No. 90 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Harold Perkins Jr. at the 92nd pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy little value on Skyler Bell in slot 94, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Parker Brailsford at pick 109 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
De'Zhaun Stribling in the 112th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
CJ Daniels in Round 4, Pick 22 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Malik Muhammad adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback, edge rusher and other spots untouched.
Somehow Jude Bowry was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Isaiah World at the 152nd overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Domani Jackson at pick No. 171 squarely in line with his ranking. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
You do not let a tight end like Dae'Quan Wright reach No. 210 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Isaiah Nwokobia went about where he belonged in pick No. 227. A minor itch, scratched.
Robert Spears-Jennings at Round 7, Pick 22 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
TJ Hall in the 243rd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
