Nobody else had Patrick Payton anywhere near the 202nd overall pick. The Patriots did, by 56 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Landing Pregnon that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st pick they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Emmanuel Pregnon in No. 63 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They let Malachi Fields come to them and pounced at slot 95. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Taurean York in the 125th overall pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Jude Bowry at Round 4, Pick 31 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had Kage Casey higher than pick 171, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow Tanner Koziol was still sitting there in pick No. 191, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nice patience on Zane Durant, who had no business lasting to slot 198. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Patrick Payton at the 202nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jimmy Rolder in pick 212, miles early. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Latrell McCutchin Sr. at the 247th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
