It is the swing that defines the weekend: Jaylon Carlies in the 202nd overall pick, a good 68 spots before the room expected him. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Watson. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
With quarterback, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
They liked Edgerrin Cooper enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 2, Pick 4. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A premium they did not need to pay, Chris Braswell a notch or two before his time. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Jaden Hicks went about where he belonged in the 58th pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They robbed the room for Kiran Amegadjie here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
A surprising call. With quarterback, tight end and other spots still to address, they spent pick 91 on Renardo Green, a safety they were not short of.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in slot 93 leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots for later.
Ray Davis at the 100th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Roger Rosengarten at the 101st overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The roster fit checks out.
They paid a round early for Jarrian Jones in slot 112, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on Tyrone Tracy Jr. at pick 113 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mason McCormick well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Trey Taylor at No. 193, and the board did not agree. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They reached into another round for Jaylon Carlies, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Value with a capital V on Eyabi Okie-Anoma in Round 7, Pick 25, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Blake Watson in pick No. 255 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
