The Cowboys put a flag in the ground for Gerry Bohanon, 269 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
The Carter value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Adding Germaine Pratt by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
Walter Nolen slipping to pick No. 22 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. More want than need.
Malaki Starks at pick 44 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They let Tate Ratledge come to them and pounced at No. 47. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 23, where Jihaad Campbell graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
TreVeyon Henderson at the 77th overall pick is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach for Tez Johnson in No. 78; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Nicholas Singleton well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No drama and no debate, Jack Bech went about where he belonged in slot 94. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Savion Williams at par in the 113th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A conviction pick on Cody Simon at pick No. 117 that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Cam Skattebo at the 148th overall pick, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Will Howard at pick 151 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; Gerry Bohanon in pick No. 168 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Barrett Carter in the 170th pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They will replay Lathan Ransom at No. 171 for years; that is how good the value is. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They robbed the room for Oronde Gadsden II here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
