The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jaylen Reed, the No. 188 name on the board, in No. 217.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The cost of the Hamilton reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
Somehow Tyler Warren was still sitting there in No. 38, and they pounced on premier tight end value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Jayden Higgins in Round 3, Pick 5; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Circle this one: TreVeyon Henderson at pick 77 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Charles Grant in slot 106. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Pat Bryant at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let a safety like Jaylen Reed reach the 217th pick and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A conviction pick on Jamon Dumas-Johnson at pick No. 220 that the board grades a round light. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They liked Ty Hamilton enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 238. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
