After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Caleb Williams is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
They are betting Smith proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The Paul value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th overall pick they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
Xavier Legette at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A quiet steal in pick No. 56: Tyler Guyton for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taking Patrick Paul in pick 68 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Junior Colson slid further than he should have, and the 87th pick is lovely value for the linebacker. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They read the board right and Kris Abrams-Draine was the payoff at slot 136. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Frank Gore Jr. at No. 182 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A big swing on Maurice Smith at Round 7, Pick 9, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
