The Chiefs did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Arvell Reese fell into pick No. 29.
They will need Black to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. TreVeyon Henderson gives the group a proven body among the projects.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Arvell Reese at the 29th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
In pick 31 they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Emmanuel Pregnon in No. 40, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 31, where D'Angelo Ponds graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Gennings Dunker in the 74th overall pick, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They did well to land Bud Clark in slot 109, just ahead of his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid up for J.C. Davis at pick No. 131 when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Trey Zuhn III at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kaleb Elarms-Orr at No. 169 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reach on Dae'Quan Wright in pick 176; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They liked Kaelon Black enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 210. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
