The Chiefs spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Lee Hunter, the No. 49 name on the board, in Round 4, Pick 12. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
Every board in the league had Cameron lower, and that gap is the story. The phones were where this weekend was really won. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
It is not that Stukes is a bad player; it is that the Chiefs had louder needs to answer first.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 18 they get a building block for the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Sonny Styles at the 40th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, D'Angelo Ponds at pick 49 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Treydan Stukes at cornerback with tight end and edge rusher open.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at No. 92 is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Jonah Coleman. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They read the board right and De'Zhaun Stribling was the payoff at pick No. 109. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Lee Hunter at the 112th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value said wait; Josh Cameron in No. 148 says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good price on Malik Benson in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cole Payton at pick 169 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Pat Coogan. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Aaron Graves at Round 6, Pick 29, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Zavion Thomas went about where he belonged in pick No. 234. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
